Local alpaca owners will be among hundreds of breeders from across Australia travelling to Tamworth NSW for the Australian Alpaca Association 17th National Show and Sale.

Association spokesman Alastair Smedley said more than 600 animals will compete at the Australian Equine and Livestock Entertainment Centre (AELEC) on October 14-17.

The alpaca judging starts on Thursday, October 14 and will culminate with the presentation of the Broad Ribbons to the Supreme Champions on the Saturday afternoon. All the entries for fleece, art, craft and photography competitions will be on display.

On Sunday, October 17 the National Auction will be held in the AELEC’s sales ring. “Rarely are 12 alpacas of such high quality on sale at the same time,’’ Mr Smedley said. “Potential purchasers from Australia and around the world will be vying to be the owners of the next generation of top stud animals.’’

Mr Smedley said the show will be ‘very competitive’. “It is a huge challenge to win the Supreme Champion’s ribbon at the National Show, but it is every alpaca breeders’ dream. It has taken years of careful breeding to produce a show team. And, each alpaca has to be halter trained and its beautiful soft silky fleece prepared and then protected until it takes its place in the show ring.’’

Originally from South America, alpacas have adapted well to conditions in Australia. The association said new breeders continue to enter the industry.

Tamworth is the only city in rural NSW to host the national event in its 17-year history. “The AELEC is a fantastic venue and Tamworth is a great place to visit so we’re looking forward to a very enjoyable show,’’ Mr Smedley said. “This is the premier event for the Australian Alpaca Association.’’
